This choral masterpiece, rather than using the Latin text of a funeral mass service, sets lyrical and evocative psalms and other texts from the Lutheran Bible. One excerpt from the first movement translates as:
He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.
